Hazelnut Growers of Oregon has a rich history of evolving to better serve growers and the customers who purchase their hazelnuts and has since become a leading hazelnut supplier. The company is headquartered in the Willamette Valley of Oregon where 99% of the hazelnuts in the United States are grown due to a perfect climate for orchards.
The company recently relocated to a new, state-of-the-art plant in Donald, Oregon. Here, the company looks forward to leveraging the efficiencies of the new plant with a high performance team and further strengthen the growing hazelnut industry.
Here’s a quick look at what Hazelnut Growers offers brands and manufacturers, national retailers and restaurant chains.
Hazelnut Varieties

Hazelnuts are available sliced, diced, dry roasted, in-shell, shelled and halves and pieces. Hazelnut Growers can also custom process hazelnuts.
Barcelona
This is the primary variety traditionally grown in the Pacific Northwest. The percentage of Barcelona’s harvested continues to shrink each year as other varieties are being planted today. Despite challenges with filbert blight, there are many healthy and productive orchards important to the industry. Average harvest is middle October.
Ennis
These are known for their large grade and oblong nut shape. Although the Ennis is a favorite of many, it is highly susceptible to blight and there are not as many acres in production. Their harvest time is similar to the Barcelona.
Jefferson
This is a common variety planted the past several years. The Jefferson has the Gasaway gene for resistance to eastern filbert blight. They are a larger nut typically harvested in the middle of October.
Dorris
These are also resistant to blight. Dorris hazelnuts are a large nut harvested by the middle of October and are known to have an exceptional flavor profile.
Yamhill
Also with blight resistance, the trees have a smaller canopy and are often planted at a higher density of trees per acre. They are harvested by late September and produce a smaller nut.
Lewis
The Lewis variety is an “end of September” harvest with smaller nuts, known for its high yields. Lewis is unique because it is a kernel variety that doesn’t have the Gasaway gene. It is heavily planted but is susceptible to filbert blight.
McDonald
Also with blight resistance, they are typically harvested by the end of September and have a smaller kernel, or nut.
Wepster
The trees are blight resistant and produce a smaller nut, referred to as a kernel variety versus the larger in-shell varieties. They are harvested by the end of September. Like McDonald, Wepster trees also pollinate each other which allows the farmer to have all production varieties and not need additional pollinators.
