Brewers and distillers can now craft their products from grains grown and malted in Ontario, traceable to the individual grain grower.

720 kg batches are processed through germination with precise computer control, ensuring reproducible results batch to batch. All grain transfers use pneumatic (air) equipment, virtually eliminating cracked kernels. Vessels are scrupulously cleaned after each batch to minimize contamination. Only high quality grains will be malted to ensure a consistent, high extract product. Standard testing will be performed to ensure each batch will perform as promised, and all products will be examined for foreign materials and toxins.

Rye Malt

Bertwell organic hops provide full floral aromas and a light citric finish.

Tested at 5% Alpha acid.

Bertwells can be obtained fresh early in September, or dried and baled year round. The hops are carefully dried by about 50%, then baled and frozen to retain their brewing qualities for up to 2 years.

Grinding and custom package sizing are available on request.

Bertwell hops may be the first truly Ontario hop. Plants found by Ian Hanna near Picton in 2004 were propagated and tested for two years to determine their ability to produce brewing quality hops.

They are a prolific and hardy variety with consistent brewing qualities comparable to any classic ale hop.

Bertwell hops are named for Bert Grant, the iconic craft brewer (and inveterate hop lover), and Wellington County, the site of their first commercial hopyard.

Lab testing and test brews strengthened a belief that these plants are probably British survivors from Prince Edward County’s ‘Barley Days’, when Upper Canada was a barley and hop growing stronghold of the British Empire.

Bertwell hops have been an ingredient of choice in beers made by Stonehammer Brewing,the London Brewing Co-operative, Charles Maclean, Paul Dickey, Niagara College’s Teaching Brewery, Wellington County Brewery, Nickelbrook Brewery, Trafalgar Brewing, and Mill St. Brewery.

Bertwell hops are grown by select individuals to organic methods, hands on cultivation, and hand picking, to ensure the hops are in their optimum condition, free from damage and contamination, upon delivery.

Ontario Beyond the Pale barley malt is stewed and roasted to provide 40-60 Lovibond. Converts like the Pale.

Beyond the Pale Newdale Barley Malt

Expansion of Bertwell production is underway through growing arrangements with 4 other organic minded growers across Ontario. This year, 410 plants are at full maturity, for a total of 1120 in the ground for increased volume in 2-3 years.

Customers will be able to advertise their 100 mile (or less!) supply, and be assured of predictable volumes every year. Using locally grown ingredients, telling the stories abut the farmers and maltsters who provided them, will educate the public to vote with their dollars for truly local beers!
