Ground Rice Hulls are widely used across a variety of industries including food, feed and pharmaceutical. The hulls are available in different formats, with or without oil, including 16/80, 20/80 and 30/80 mesh sizes.

In the beverage industry, whole and ground rice hulls are good for brewing and distilling filtration depending on the stage of processing. Ground rice hulls are better than whole for fine filtration as they help remove tiny particles in post-mash filtration or in whiskey distillation. Ground rice hulls are also a good anti-caking agent as they prevent malt flour and grain dust from clumping in pre-milled brewing grains. The key differences are whole rice hulls are a lautering aid and used to prevent stuck mashes in the mash tun and lautering stage while ground rice hulls are for filtration, clarification and anti-caking in the post-mash filtration and grain storage stages.

For horticulture, when mixed into soil, ground hulls enhance water retention and aeration and decompose faster than whole hulls, making it ideal for improving compost efficiency. Whole rice hulls are better for mulch, soil aeration and weed suppression, while ground rice hulls are best for soil conditioning and composting.

Industrial uses of ground rice hulls include abrasives and polishing agents for industrial cleaning, filler for industrial filters and thermal insulation products and can also be processed into pellets for fuel applications.

For feed, ground rice hulls are a source of insoluble fiber in livestock and pet foods which aid in digestion and can also help improve the texture and stability of animal feed pellets. Whole rice hulls are better for bedding and feed fiber, ground rice hulls are a good digestive aid and pellet binder.

In particular, SRB is an excellent choice for animal feed due to its high nutritional value, digestibility and energy content.

Rice Bran is the outer layer of the kernel, gives brown rice its color and nutty flavor. Rice Bran is used to feed livestock and is an excellent source of thiamin, niacin, vitamin B-6, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium and fiber.

Wheat Middlings, or Wheat Midds, are a good source of protein, fiber and phosphorus for livestock. The middlings are a byproduct of the wheat milling industry that is not flour and are rich in protein, offering high levels of energy to cattle. They are high in fiber, low in starch and they produce little bloat or acidosis when fed in the right amount.

Wheat Bran consists of the outer layer of the wheat kernel and is used in both feed and food. Wheat Bran is a very palatable, high-fiber feed supplement for livestock. Wheat Bran also makes it easy to add important fiber, vitamins and minerals to shelf-stable cereals, crackers and nutrition bars.

Buckwheat Hulls are carefully removed from buckwheat groats without using steam or heat to treat the groat. These hulls are commonly used for packaging, stuffing pillows, mulch, compost additives and more.

Whole Cottonseed (WCS) has high protein (23%), high energy in the form of fat (20%), and crude fiber (24%) on a dry matter basis. This combination is attractive based on its comparative pricing and nutritional analysis, especially when feeding high producing dairy cows. WCS can be fed as a supplement to any feed program or free choice with natural range forage.

Soybean Meal contains 44-48% crude protein, making it a highly concentrated protein source for livestock. The meal is available for both Conventional and Organic feed operations. A primary protein source in poultry, swine, cattle, and aquaculture feeds, soybean meal is also used in pet food as a protein supplement and for farmed fish diets due to its balanced amino acid profile.

Soybean Meal is also used as a protein ingredient in foods like soy flour, soy protein concentrates, and textured vegetable protein (TVP).

Cottonseed Meal is a widely used protein supplement in beef cattle diets, valued for its affordability compared to soybean meal. With a protein content of 45% on a dry matter basis, it serves as a high-quality protein source while also providing an excellent supply of supplemental phosphorus. Although soybean meal contains approximately 17% more protein than cottonseed meal, it is often 25% to 35% more expensive, making cottonseed meal a cost-effective alternative. Additionally, cottonseed meal has comparable protein degradability to soybean meal, allowing it to effectively replace soybean meal in most cattle feeding programs. However, it is not recommended for young calves under four months of age, as they require an alternative protein source better suited to their nutritional needs.

Beyond cattle feed, cottonseed meal has a variety of agricultural applications. It is commonly used as a natural fertilizer due to its high nitrogen content, promoting healthy plant growth and improving soil fertility. Additionally, it is an effective feed ingredient for other livestock, including sheep, goats, and poultry, as long as gossypol levels—a natural compound found in cottonseed—are properly managed to avoid toxicity. Cottonseed meal also contributes to sustainable farming by utilizing a byproduct of the cotton industry, reducing waste while supporting livestock nutrition and crop production.

Broken rice is a highly versatile and economical ingredient used in animal feed, breakfast cereals, rice flour production, and pet food. It is also a key component in the fermentation process for beverages like beer, sake, and vinegar. Despite being fragments of whole rice grains, broken rice retains the same nutritional value as its whole-kernel counterpart, whether in milled or brown form.

Broken rice is categorized into two main classifications: Second-heads and Brewers, each serving distinct industrial purposes.

Second-Heads: These fragments measure between ½ to ¾ the length of a whole kernel and are considered the higher-quality of the two categories. Due to their finer texture and purity, Second-heads are primarily used for rice flour production, making them ideal for gluten-free baking and thickening agents in various food products. Additionally, their high starch content makes them a valuable fermentation agent in brewing alcoholic beverages such as beer and sake.

Brewers: These are smaller rice fragments, measuring less than ½ the length of a whole kernel. Brewers are most commonly utilized in pet food formulations due to their hypoallergenic properties and neutral taste, making them an excellent source of easily digestible carbohydrates. They are used in various pet food products, including kibble and wet food, to complement protein-rich ingredients while providing sustained energy.

Regardless of classification, both Second-heads and Brewers maintain the same nutritional benefits as whole rice, offering essential carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Their affordability and adaptability make them an invaluable ingredient across multiple industries, ensuring minimal food waste while maximizing utility.
